New comm!

Hello everyone,

I've just created [info]which_phone  - for people who want to discuss/complain/advise on current and upcoming mobile phones, specifically the smart phone market. For that reason, I thought it might be relevant to people in this comm.

I've got a HTC Touch Dual currently, and have used windows mobile phones for the past few years. However, I'm thinking (nervously!) about changing over to a Symbian-based phone and am eager to get opinions on both platforms. So, if you feel like coming over to support winmo in the ultimate OS fight, feel free. ;-)

Thanks! And hope it's okay to post this kind of thing here.

Save me from the da-da-dings!

Has anyone ever encountered a problem where, after soft resting, your device WONT SHUT UP with 'reminder beeps'?

There's no notification box or anything telling me why it's beeping, but the light flashes and the thing goes 'da-da-ding' every 2/3 seconds and further soft resets don't appear to have changed things...

I have had this before, but it usually stops after a second reset and I thought (having deleted most old calender appointments) I'd solved it.

Anyone have any tips or solutions?

Hello and a question.

Hello, I have used Pocket PC's for a couple of years now and love them. I keep my reading material, appointments etc on them. I currently have a problem though. I got a used Samsung SPH I-700 which is great now I don't have to carry a phone and my PDA. It will not sync though. I am running Windows XP home on a Dell Inspiron 531S. None of the versions of activesync I have downloaded will detect it. I believe I need the proper Windows CE driver but can not find one. I have downloaded the driver from the Samsung website and still no go. I have no disc for this phone and have had no luck finding one. I am going to try getting a new sync cable and see if that helps but the one I have is in fine shape so I do not think that is it. Activesync just refuses to see it. Any help or ideas at all would be greatly appreciated.

Podcatchers...

I’ve just switched podcatcher from myPodder to BeyondPod.

The main reason for this change, is that the WM version of myPodder was becoming slow and hanging when trying to download podcasts. The negative side of switching from myPodder is that it’s closely tied in to PodcastReady, and I have the Linux version running on my laptop... meaning that I have a synchronised podcast listing on both mobile and laptop.

Now, msmobiles.com claim BeyondPod to be the “best podcast catcher for Windows Mobile”. My initial impression of BeyondPod is that it is certainly quicker and more stable than myPodder (at least it doesn’t hang!), but I don’t find it as intuitive. myPodder was more holistic, giving you a list of podcasts, a list of episodes for those podcasts, and a list of downloaded podcasts. BeyondPod is totally feed-centric, so you can only do stuff at feed level. You can’t, for example, view every podcast you’ve downloaded so you can pick and choose which episode you listen to next... you have to select your chosen feed first before you choose a episode.

Does anyone else use a mobile podcatcher for Windows Mobile? What would you recommend?

ROM update for HTC PPC-6800/Sprint Mogul...

Quick question about updating the ROM on my Sprint Mogul...

Will all the programs that I've installed on the memory card continue to work after I install a ROM update? I can't remember whether or not anything is added to the registry on the handset itself when a program is installed on a memory card.

I've tried to Google this, but I'm not coming up with any answers.

Thanks for your help!
